Lake Tahoe Feedback: There are more places for renting gear like boats, jet skis, excursion tours and such along South Shore. But you are more likely to find cheaper resorts (although fewer) near the North Shore.

It boils down to an area's "popularity." Where there is a greater demand for services, there will be a higher price. And, with greater demand, you get more crowed and business services to cater to those crowds.

Do some online research for "Vacation Rentals" in the Tahoe area. Depening on the size of the family, you can find some very good prices on cabins and condos where folks can set up "houskeeping," bringing and preparing your own food, hanging out enjoying the view and making it your "base camp" for all your other activities. When you locate a few likely places, locate them on a map and make your plans accordingly.

If you don't mind some "commuting" during your stay, you can find some bargains in Truckee, just a few miles North of the lake

But still, if you don't mind a cheap "motel" type place, where you can walk to the various recreation venues, then South Shore and Stateline may be your best choice.

Lake Tahoe Feedback: It depends on what you're looking for. South Lake Tahoe is much more touristy, so its good for resorts (try the Royal Valhalla), shopping, and casinos. As for your list, it might be easy to rent a boat and go jet skiing there because of the touristy-ness.
North Lake Tahoe is my personal favorite, since it is a bit less touristy. You could probably find cheaper resorts here, but I don't have any specific reccomendations. North Lake Tahoe definately beats South Lake Tahoe for hanging out on the beach and fishing just because its less crowded. i really don't notice much difference in the sides on the actual lake. It might be a little harder to find a place to rent a jet ski but not really. There are a significant amount of tourists there, too.

Hope this was helpful. Have fun on your trip!!!!!!
