What should I know if this is my first trip to Lake Tahoe?

Answered By Editor

Because of its layout and environment, Lake Tahoe comes with its own unique culture. For this reason, there are a few things you should know that can make your trip all that much better:

* You can get to Lake Tahoe by driving east on I-80 or US 50. Take I-80 if you are bound for the north shore and US 50 if you are going to the south.

* It's easy to waste your time back-tracking around the lake. So, when planning your days in Lake Tahoe, use a map to locate everything you want to see, and then plan your route in advance.

* Bring sunscreen and use a higher SPF than usual. Because of the lake, mountains and altitude, the sun's rays are intense.

* At 6,000 feet the air is very dry. Pack eye drops and moisturizers.

* You should know that the police are VERY serious about enforcing drunk-driving laws. Keep in mind that alcohol's effects are greater at 6,000 feet.

* If you can, go sometime during the week, not weekends. Prices at hotels plunge on Sunday night and there are vacancies everywhere.

* Plan to make dinner reservations on the North Shore on Friday and Saturday nights.

* Even in summer, evenings are cool, so bring warm clothing.

* At South Lake Tahoe, avoid the frustration of traffic congestion and take advantage of the Blue Tahoe Trolley and Emerald Bay Shuttle.
